Emerging Voters

In Texas, registering to vote is a relatively straightforward process. Here are the steps anyone can take to help teenagers register to vote:

1. Eligibility

Teenagers must meet the eligibility requirements to register to vote in Texas. They must be:

  • A U.S. citizen

  • A resident of the county where they submit the application

  • At least 17 years and 10 months old at the time of registration (and at least 18 years old on Election Day)

  • Not a convicted felon (unless they have completed their sentence, probation, and parole)

  • Not declared mentally incapacitated by a court of law

2. Obtain a Voter Registration Application:

Teenagers can get a voter registration application in several ways:

  • Download and print an application from the Texas Secretary of State’s website: LINK
  • If you’re in our local area, request an application from the Harris County Voter Registrar office by phone, mail, or email
  • Pick up an application at government offices, such as libraries, post offices, and the Department of Public Safety

3. Complete the Application:

Fill out the voter registration application, providing all required information, including name, address, date of birth, and either a Texas driver's license number or the last four digits of the Social Security number.

4. Submit the Application:

Mail or hand-deliver the completed application to the Harris County Voter Registrar office. The mailing address is: Ann Harris Bennett Tax Assessor-Collector & Voter Registrar P.O. Box 3527 Houston, TX 77253-3527

Please note that Texas does not allow online voter registration. The completed application must be submitted by mail or in person.
